A striking woodcut by Paul Gauguin, featuring a meditative Buddha figure rendered in the artist's signature bold, graphic style.
This woodcut by Paul Gauguin reflects his fascination with non-Western religious iconography, a subject he explored extensively during his time in French Polynesia. The composition features a seated figure of the Buddha, rendered with the stark, high-contrast aesthetic characteristic of Gauguin's printmaking practice. By carving directly into the wood block, the artist achieved a raw, tactile quality that emphasises the graphic nature of the medium.
The figure is framed by an arched mandorla, which contains subtle decorative motifs. Gauguin employs a simplified, almost primitive line quality, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the meditative posture and the spiritual weight of the subject. The background is heavily textured, created by the deliberate gouging of the wood, which provides a dark, atmospheric contrast to the lighter, carved forms of the Buddha. In the upper left corner, the artist includes his monogram, 'PG', alongside a small circular mark, which serves as a signature element in many of his graphic works from this period.
This print demonstrates Gauguin's interest in the synthesis of diverse cultural influences. He often looked to Javanese and Buddhist art, incorporating these visual languages into his own unique style. The work is not a literal representation of a specific statue, but rather an interpretation filtered through his own artistic lens. The woodcut technique allowed him to experiment with bold shapes and flat planes of colour, moving away from the traditional perspective of European painting. This piece offers a clear view into the artist's technical process and his ongoing dialogue with Eastern philosophy and art, which remained a recurring theme in his later career.
