A delicate lithograph by Odilon Redon depicting the Valkyrie Brünnhilde in a quiet, introspective profile view.
Odilon Redon produced this lithograph, titled Brünnhilde, during a period when his work shifted from the dark, macabre imagery of his early 'noirs' towards a more ethereal and light-filled aesthetic. The subject is the Valkyrie from Richard Wagner's operatic cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen. Redon captures the figure in profile, a compositional choice that lends the work a sense of classical stillness and timelessness.
The artist employs a delicate, soft-focus technique characteristic of his lithographic practice. By layering fine marks, he creates a luminous quality that seems to emanate from the paper itself. The figure of Brünnhilde is rendered with a quiet, introspective expression, her gaze directed away from the viewer. Her long, flowing hair is depicted with light, rhythmic lines that contrast with the more solid, shadowed areas of her profile and the background.
Redon was deeply influenced by music and literature, often drawing inspiration from the works of Wagner, Poe, and Mallarmé. In this print, he avoids the literal narrative of the opera, choosing instead to evoke the psychological state of the character. The inclusion of a small, delicate flower to the left of the figure introduces a subtle, organic element that balances the composition. This work demonstrates Redon's ability to translate complex literary themes into visual form through suggestion and atmosphere rather than explicit detail. The print reflects the Symbolist interest in the dreamlike and the subjective, prioritising internal experience over external reality. It remains a fine example of his technical mastery of the lithographic medium, showcasing his control over tone and texture to achieve a sense of mystery.
