A detailed etching by Félix Hilaire Buhot depicting a bronze imp-like figure, captured with atmospheric aquatint tones.
Félix Hilaire Buhot, a French printmaker known for his technical experimentation, produced this etching depicting a small bronze figure. The subject is a grotesque, imp-like creature standing upon a simple stool, holding a shallow vessel aloft. The artist employs aquatint to capture the metallic sheen and dark, solid mass of the bronze, contrasting the figure against the stark, unadorned paper background.
Buhot often incorporated marginalia and notes into his compositions, and this work is no exception. The handwritten annotations on the left side of the plate provide context, identifying the object as a bronze genie or spirit from the collection of Monsieur Ph. Burty. This inclusion of provenance details within the print itself reflects the artist's interest in the documentation of objects and the intersection of personal collection and artistic reproduction.
The figure possesses a dynamic, slightly twisted posture, typical of the late nineteenth-century fascination with the macabre and the exotic. The etching demonstrates Buhot's mastery of tone, using the aquatint process to create a deep, velvety black that defines the form of the sculpture. By isolating the object in the centre of the frame, the artist invites the viewer to examine the physical characteristics of the bronze, from the pointed ears of the spirit to the texture of its garment. This print is a clear example of Buhot's ability to elevate a mundane study of a decorative object into a compelling visual narrative. It remains a fine specimen of his graphic work, showcasing his precise control over the etching needle and his sensitivity to light and shadow.
