Description
Broadway Tower in the Cotswolds rises as a castle-like folly above open hills, its round turrets and high outlook giving the Worcestershire landmark a distinctive place on the skyline.
Conceived with the landscape designer Capability Brown and realised by James Wyatt, Broadway Tower was completed in the late eighteenth century for the Earl of Coventry. The Worcestershire folly stands near Broadway, using the form of a small castle as an ornamental landmark on high ground.
Golden stone turrets rise from a rounded green mound, with circular windows above slender arched openings. Small balconies catch the light below a crenellated roofline. Beyond, hedged fields and wooded ridges roll towards a blue horizon, with another small tower at left. Grey foreground rocks anchor the near slope under bright white clouds, suggesting a clear summer day across the Cotswold hills.
