Description
A striking 1969 screenprint by Allan D'Arcangelo, featuring the bold geometric forms of a road barrier against a simplified highway backdrop.
Allan D'Arcangelo was a prominent figure within the American Pop Art movement, known for his focus on the visual language of the modern highway. Bridge Barrier, produced in 1969, captures his interest in the intersection of industrial design and the American road trip. The composition utilises a flat, graphic approach, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the stark geometry of road signage and safety equipment. In this work, the viewer is confronted by a large, striped barrier that dominates the foreground. The bold, diagonal black and white stripes create a sense of obstruction, forcing the eye to navigate the space around the physical barrier. Behind this, a simplified view of a road receding into the distance is visible, framed by large, flat planes of orange and blue. These colours are applied with a precision that removes the presence of the artist's hand, a common technique in the hard-edge style of the period. D'Arcangelo often explored the psychological experience of driving, treating the road as a site of both freedom and restriction. By isolating elements such as barriers, signs, and road markings, he transformed mundane objects into icons of contemporary life. The work avoids traditional perspective, instead relying on the juxtaposition of geometric shapes to create a sense of depth. The result is a clean, clinical representation of the built environment, reflecting the artist's fascination with the synthetic nature of the modern landscape. This screenprint demonstrates his ability to distil complex visual information into a concise, impactful image, maintaining a balance between representational subject matter and abstract form.
