A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicting a traditional wedding procession in Edo-period Japan.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts a wedding procession, a subject drawn from the series Marriage in Brocade Prints, the Carriage of the Virtuous Woman (Konrei nishiki misao-guruma). Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colour blocks to create more complex and nuanced imagery than earlier monochromatic or two-colour prints.
The composition shows a bride seated within a palanquin, or koshi, carried by a group of attendants. The figures are rendered with the slender, graceful proportions characteristic of Harunobu's work. The attendants wear matching green garments, creating a sense of rhythmic order as they move across the frame. The palanquin itself is positioned centrally, serving as the focus of the procession. The background features a simplified architectural wall, which provides a flat, stage-like setting for the figures. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft greens, muted oranges, and subtle ink tones to define the forms.
Harunobu's work often focused on the lives of women in Edo-period Japan, capturing domestic scenes, seasonal activities, and literary references. This print reflects the artist's ability to balance decorative elements with narrative clarity. The use of line is precise, defining the folds of the kimono and the structure of the palanquin without unnecessary clutter. The print demonstrates the technical advancements of the mid-eighteenth century, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer reached a high level of sophistication. This piece offers a glimpse into the social customs of the period, presented through the refined aesthetic lens of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
