A detailed 1772 etching by Cornelis van Noorde documenting the aftermath of the fire at the Amsterdam City Theatre on the Keizersgracht.
This etching by Cornelis van Noorde documents the destruction of the Amsterdam City Theatre, or Schouwburg, located on the Keizersgracht. The event occurred on the night of 11 May 1772, when a fire broke out during a performance, resulting in the total loss of the building and the tragic deaths of several individuals. Van Noorde, a Haarlem-based artist known for his portraiture and topographical work, captures the immediate aftermath of the disaster with clinical precision.
The composition focuses on the skeletal remains of the theatre facade. The upper gables are partially collapsed, and the interior structure is exposed to the night sky. Van Noorde employs a dense system of cross-hatching to render the smoke and the charred masonry, creating a stark contrast between the dark, turbulent atmosphere and the rigid, vertical lines of the surrounding canal houses. The surrounding architecture remains largely intact, providing a sense of scale and context for the devastation.
As a historical record, the print serves as a primary visual account of a major urban catastrophe in eighteenth-century Amsterdam. The artist avoids dramatic embellishment, preferring a documentary approach that emphasises the physical reality of the ruins. The fine line work typical of van Noorde's etching technique allows for the inclusion of architectural details, such as the window frames and the pedimented entrance, which remain visible despite the fire damage. This work is a valuable example of how printmakers of the period functioned as reporters, disseminating news of significant public events to a wider audience through the medium of the copperplate engraving and etching.
