A refined surimono woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, featuring a decorated ceramic bowl and a plum blossom branch, typical of Edo-period poetry circles.
This woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai belongs to the genre of surimono, a form of privately commissioned, limited-edition print often exchanged among members of poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. Unlike commercial prints produced for the mass market, surimono allowed artists to experiment with refined printing techniques, such as embossing and the use of metallic pigments, on high-quality paper.
The composition features a shallow ceramic bowl decorated with a repeating geometric and floral pattern, placed alongside a delicate branch of plum blossoms. The plum blossom is a traditional motif in Japanese art, representing resilience and the arrival of spring. Shinsai, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, demonstrates a mastery of negative space and precise line work. The inclusion of calligraphic text suggests this print was created to accompany a kyōka, a humorous or satirical form of waka poetry popular among the literati of the time.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted reds to draw attention to the subtle details of the bowl's rim and the sparse, elegant lines of the plum branch. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where simplicity and the juxtaposition of natural elements with man-made objects were highly regarded. The paper texture remains visible, adding a tactile quality to the image that is characteristic of the original woodblock medium. This work provides a glimpse into the sophisticated social and artistic exchanges of the early nineteenth century, where visual art and literature were deeply intertwined.
