A refined Edo-period ink and colour painting by Sakai Hōitsu, depicting a boy guiding an ox within a circular composition.
This work by Sakai Hōitsu depicts a quiet, rural interaction between a young boy and an ox. Hōitsu, a central figure of the Edo-period Rinpa school, demonstrates his characteristic economy of line and focus on negative space. The circular composition, known as a maru-gaku, frames the subjects against a sparse, atmospheric background. The boy, dressed in a muted red garment, attempts to guide the ox toward a water source. The animal is rendered with soft, rounded forms, contrasting with the angular, bare branches of a tree that overhangs the scene.
As a practitioner of the Rinpa tradition, Hōitsu often drew inspiration from earlier masters such as Ogata Kōrin, yet he developed a distinct, refined aesthetic. His approach to this subject avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the relationship between the two figures. The use of ink washes creates a sense of depth and moisture, typical of the period's interest in capturing the essence of a moment rather than a literal transcription of reality. The silk support provides a subtle texture that complements the delicate application of pigment. The signature and seal at the bottom confirm the work as an authentic example of Hōitsu's later period, where his style became increasingly minimalist and contemplative. This print captures the original scroll format, preserving the balance between the circular image and the surrounding mounting materials.
