A detailed silver bowl featuring relief scenes from the life of Cleopatra, attributed to the Italian Baroque artist Bernardo Strozzi.
This silver bowl, attributed to the Genoese master Bernardo Strozzi, demonstrates the technical precision and narrative ambition characteristic of Baroque metalwork. The composition is organised into distinct registers, with a central medallion depicting a specific moment from the life of Cleopatra, surrounded by a wider field filled with dynamic battle scenes. The relief work is exceptionally dense, capturing the movement of horses and figures in conflict with a sense of urgency and physical weight.
Strozzi, primarily known for his oil paintings, applied his understanding of dramatic lighting and theatrical staging to this decorative object. The outer rim features smaller, secondary scenes that provide context to the central narrative, framed by decorative motifs that guide the eye around the circular form. The play of light across the raised silver surfaces creates a shifting appearance, as the shadows within the relief change depending on the angle of illumination. This object functions as both a functional vessel and a display of craftsmanship, reflecting the taste for classical themes in seventeenth-century Italian decorative arts. The narrative focus on Cleopatra allows for a display of varied human emotion and action, from the quiet intimacy of the central scene to the chaotic energy of the surrounding military engagements. The work remains a fine example of how artists of the period moved between different media, bringing their painterly sensibilities to the permanence of metal.
