An atmospheric etching by Mosè Bianchi, capturing the quiet depth and light of a forest through varied, expressive mark-making.
Mosè Bianchi, a prominent figure in the Lombard school of the nineteenth century, demonstrates his technical command of the etching medium in this atmospheric forest study. The composition focuses on the verticality of the trees, which frame the scene and draw the eye toward the obscured, light-filled centre. Bianchi employs a variety of mark-making techniques to differentiate the textures of the bark, the tangled undergrowth, and the soft, diffused light filtering through the canopy.
The work reflects the artist's interest in the natural world, a subject he approached with a focus on tonal variation rather than rigid detail. The etching process allows for a range of greys, from the deep, bitten lines of the foreground trunks to the delicate, hazy hatching that suggests the depth of the woods. This piece captures a quiet, observational moment, typical of the period's shift toward capturing the immediate qualities of light and atmosphere in nature. The arched top of the plate adds a sense of enclosure, reinforcing the intimate feeling of being within the forest.
Bianchi was known for his versatility, moving between genre painting and these more experimental graphic works. His approach to printmaking often mirrored his painterly concerns, prioritising the mood of the scene over precise topographical accuracy. The resulting image is a study in shadow and form, where the interplay of light creates a sense of volume and space. This print offers a view into the artist's private practice, where he explored the expressive potential of black and white media to convey the stillness of the Italian countryside.
