Description
Return to the Lake District through Borrowdale, where green fields and wooded crags unfold along a long valley beneath steep fells and a softly clouded blue sky.
A stone wall crosses the middle slope below a compact rocky knoll topped with conifers. Mature broadleaf trees crowd the near ground, leaving small pasture openings between them. Higher on the right, pale exposed rock and muted heather patches mark the great fell face, while cooler ridges close the far end of the valley.
Borrowdale has an unusually clear relationship between sheltered farmland and rugged upland ground. Seen from Castle Crag, the enclosed fields give a measure to the fells rising above them. This outlook can speak to anyone who enjoys the valley's lower paths as much as the high routes, recognising the variety of country held within a relatively narrow corridor.
