A detailed woodcut border by Hans Holbein the Younger, featuring Saint Peter and Saint Paul, originally designed for a sixteenth-century map of Gaul.
This woodcut border, attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger, demonstrates the precision characteristic of his early work in Basel. Created during the 1520s, the piece functions as a decorative frame for a map of Gaul, taken from a contemporary edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. Holbein, who spent his formative years in Basel, frequently collaborated with local printers to produce book illustrations and title pages.
The composition follows a structured, architectural arrangement. Saint Peter and Saint Paul occupy the side panels, depicted in classical drapery with their traditional attributes. Above them, the Basel coat of arms is flanked by winged creatures, while the lower register features a central putto riding a lion, accompanied by a winged ox and a winged lion. These figures draw upon the iconography of the four evangelists, integrated into a Renaissance decorative scheme. The line work is sharp and controlled, reflecting the technical requirements of woodblock carving.
Holbein's ability to balance human figures with ornamental motifs is evident here. The figures possess a sense of weight and volume, despite the limitations of the medium. The text block at the centre provides geographical data, yet the surrounding border commands attention through its balance of religious symbolism and classical ornamentation. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of cartography, theology, and graphic design in the early sixteenth century. It remains a fine example of the high standard of book production in Basel during this period, where artists and scholars worked in close proximity to advance the dissemination of knowledge through printed media.
