A detailed study of a gnarled tree by Dutch artist Simon Moulijn, captured in 1911 with expressive crayon strokes.
This work by Simon Moulijn, a Dutch artist associated with the Hague School and later developments in Dutch graphic art, captures a specific tree study at Vogelenzang. Executed in 1911, the drawing demonstrates Moulijn's focus on the structural character of natural forms. The artist employs a lithographic crayon to define the gnarled, textured bark and the reaching limbs of the subject.
Moulijn was known for his technical proficiency in printmaking and drawing, often choosing subjects that allowed for a quiet, observational approach. The composition centres on the trunk, which dominates the frame, while the branches extend outwards with a sense of organic rhythm. The use of light and shadow is restrained, relying on the contrast between the dark, rhythmic strokes of the crayon and the neutral tone of the paper.
This study reflects a period in the artist's career when he moved away from purely descriptive representation towards a more personal interpretation of form. The lines are deliberate, capturing the age and weathering of the wood without unnecessary embellishment. The signature and location, Vogelenzang, are inscribed at the bottom right, grounding the work in a specific place and time. As a piece of graphic art, it offers a clear view into the artist's process, showing how he translated the physical reality of a tree into a series of marks on a page. The work remains a fine example of early twentieth-century Dutch drawing, prioritising the tactile quality of the medium and the inherent geometry found in nature.
