An elegant ex libris etching by Sidney L. Smith, created for the author Clara Erskine Clement, featuring an allegorical angel within a decorative border.
This ex libris, or bookplate, by Sidney L. Smith, demonstrates the technical precision associated with his career as an engraver and etcher. Smith was a prolific creator of bookplates during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period when the custom of personalising one's library with bespoke graphic art reached a height of popularity among collectors.
The composition features a central allegorical figure, an angel, rendered with fine, controlled lines. The figure is positioned within a decorative border that incorporates classical motifs, including scrolling foliage and small figures at the base. The text, identifying the owner as Clara Erskine Clement, is integrated into the design. The inclusion of the word 'Hope' suggests a thematic focus common in the period, where personal bookplates often reflected the intellectual or moral interests of the owner. Clara Erskine Clement was a well-known author of art history books, and this plate would have been affixed to the inside covers of her personal volumes.
Smith's approach to the medium is evident in the contrast between the dark, etched background and the lighter, modelled forms of the angel. The border provides a structured frame, typical of the period's interest in historical revivalism and ornamental design. The work is a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship applied to functional ephemera during the American Renaissance. The print captures the intersection of personal identity and artistic expression, providing a window into the bibliophilic culture of the era.
