A study of a traditional Dutch fishing boat, or bomschuit, resting on the shore, rendered with textured brushwork and an earthy palette.
This work depicts a bomschuit, a traditional flat-bottomed fishing vessel, resting upon the sand. The artist employs a direct, painterly approach, characteristic of the late nineteenth-century Dutch tradition. The heavy, robust hull of the boat occupies the foreground, its form rendered with visible, textured brushwork that conveys the weight and weathered condition of the timber. The sail, partially furled, rises vertically, creating a strong compositional axis against the pale, atmospheric sky.
The palette remains grounded in earthy tones, reflecting the coastal environment of the North Sea. Ochres, muted greens, and deep browns dominate the vessel, while the sand and sky are captured in lighter, cooler greys and whites. The artist focuses on the interplay of light across the surfaces, using thick impasto to suggest the texture of the sand and the rough planks of the boat. A second, smaller vessel is visible in the distance, providing a sense of scale and depth to the scene.
Westerwoudt captures the quiet, utilitarian nature of these fishing boats when they are not at sea. The composition avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to focus on the essential forms and the quality of light on the Dutch coast. This approach aligns with the broader interests of painters working in the Netherlands during this period, who sought to document the daily lives of fishing communities and the specific atmospheric conditions of the shoreline. The work provides a clear, unadorned observation of maritime life, prioritising the physical presence of the boat over narrative or sentimentality. The brushwork is confident and rhythmic, suggesting a swift execution that captures the immediate impression of the scene.
