A detailed 1807 figure study by Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk, depicting a farmer resting with a yoke, rendered in pen and ink with wash.
This study by Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk, dated 1807, captures a quiet moment of rural life. The artist depicts a farmer seated on a stool, viewed from behind. The figure wears a hat and carries a yoke for buckets across his shoulders, a common implement for agricultural labour in the early nineteenth century. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the posture and form of the subject.
Van Troostwijk employs a precise, controlled line to define the contours of the figure and the wooden structure of the yoke. The application of wash provides subtle shading, giving volume to the farmer's clothing and the stool. The work reflects the artist's interest in observing everyday life, a common pursuit among Dutch artists of the period who sought to document the realities of the countryside. The drawing is signed and dated in the upper right corner, typical of the artist's practice of documenting his studies.
As a Dutch Romantic artist, Van Troostwijk often turned his attention to the rural environment. His work is characterised by a directness of observation. This drawing serves as a clear example of his ability to render form with economy and accuracy. The neutral paper tone and the monochromatic ink palette maintain a focus on the structural elements of the drawing. It is a piece that invites close inspection of the artist's technique and his approach to capturing the human form in a state of rest. The simplicity of the scene allows the viewer to appreciate the draftsmanship and the historical context of the subject matter without distraction.
