A traditional ink and colour portrait of the Zen patriarch Bodhidharma, painted by the founder of the Kano school, Kano Masanobu.
This portrait depicts Bodhidharma, the semi-legendary monk credited with the transmission of Chan Buddhism to China. Kano Masanobu, the founder of the Kano school, employs a style rooted in the ink-wash traditions of the Muromachi period. The figure is rendered with a focus on the psychological intensity of the subject, rather than mere physical likeness. His heavy-lidded eyes and stern expression convey the meditative discipline associated with the Zen tradition.
The artist uses a restrained palette, allowing the muted red of the robes to provide a subtle contrast against the aged silk background. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the definition of the facial features and the coarse texture of the beard. The composition is stark, placing the subject against an empty field to emphasise his isolation and internal focus. This approach reflects the aesthetic values of the period, which favoured simplicity and the direct expression of spiritual concepts through ink painting.
Kano Masanobu served as the official painter to the Ashikaga shogunate, and his work helped establish the stylistic foundations for the Kano school. This painting demonstrates the synthesis of Chinese ink-wash techniques with Japanese sensibilities. The figure of Bodhidharma appears frequently in Zen art, often represented in a state of intense concentration. Here, the artist captures the monk in a moment of stillness, his gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. The work remains a representative example of early Kano school portraiture, demonstrating the technical control and thematic focus that defined the lineage for subsequent generations of painters.
