A minimalist ink painting of the Zen patriarch Bodhidharma by the Japanese master Kano Sanraku, capturing the monk in a state of intense meditation.
This ink painting depicts Bodhidharma, the semi-legendary monk credited with transmitting Chan Buddhism to China, known in Japan as Daruma. Kano Sanraku, a prominent member of the Kano school, employs a minimalist approach here. The figure is rendered with bold, sweeping ink lines that define the heavy robes and the monk's seated posture. His expression is one of intense focus, characterised by thick, arched eyebrows and a piercing gaze. The artist uses the economy of line to convey the weight and presence of the subject, leaving the background empty to emphasise the meditative state of the figure.
Kano Sanraku was a key figure in the transition from the Momoyama to the early Edo period. While the Kano school is often associated with elaborate gold-leaf screens, this work demonstrates the versatility of the school in executing monochrome ink paintings, or suiboku-ga. The style reflects the influence of Zen aesthetics, where simplicity and directness are valued over decorative complexity. The figure of Daruma is a recurring subject in Japanese art, often used to represent perseverance and the discipline required for enlightenment. The composition is balanced, with the circular form of the seated monk creating a sense of stability. The brushwork is confident, showing the technical mastery expected of a painter of Sanraku's standing. This print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original ink, preserving the texture of the paper and the fluidity of the artist's hand. It is a study in restraint, offering a quiet presence suitable for a space dedicated to reflection or study.
