A minimalist ink painting by Kano Genshun depicting the legendary monk Bodhidharma crossing the Yangzi River on a single reed.
This ink painting depicts the legendary figure of Bodhidharma, the semi-mythical monk credited with bringing Chan Buddhism to China. The composition focuses on the narrative of his crossing the Yangzi River, a feat achieved by standing upon a single reed. Kano Genshun, a member of the Kano school, employs a minimalist approach that aligns with the Zen aesthetic of the period.
The figure of Bodhidharma is rendered with fluid, calligraphic brushwork. His robes are suggested through sweeping, economical lines, while his facial features are defined with subtle ink washes. The artist leaves much of the paper surface blank, creating a sense of space that directs attention to the monk's contemplative expression. The reed beneath his feet is indicated by a few swift strokes, grounding the subject in the miraculous context of the story.
Above the figure, an inscription in Chinese characters provides a poetic reflection on the event. The presence of red seals adds a formal element to the work, identifying the artist and the provenance of the scroll. The muted palette, restricted to shades of black ink against the aged tone of the paper, emphasises the austerity associated with Zen practice. This piece reflects the Kano school's ability to adapt traditional Chinese themes into the Japanese ink wash tradition, known as suibokuga. The work functions as a meditative object, inviting the viewer to consider the simplicity and directness central to the Zen tradition. The lack of background detail ensures that the focus remains entirely on the spiritual presence of the subject, capturing a moment of transition and quiet resolve.
