A striking depiction of the Maine wilderness by Neil Welliver, capturing the contrast between a charred blueberry burn and a vibrant green hillside.
Neil Welliver is recognised for his direct engagement with the wilderness of Maine. This work depicts a blueberry burn, a traditional agricultural practice where fields are intentionally set alight to encourage new growth. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the charred, dark foreground of the burn, the rising green slope of Morey's Hill, and a sky filled with sweeping, linear cloud formations.
Welliver worked primarily en plein air, often carrying large canvases into the woods to capture the specific light and atmosphere of the region. His technique involves the application of thin, controlled layers of paint, which allows the texture of the canvas to remain visible. This approach creates a surface that feels both immediate and considered. The stark contrast between the blackened earth and the bright, verdant hillside demonstrates his interest in the visual rhythms of the natural world.
Unlike many painters of the American wilderness who sought to romanticise their subjects, Welliver focused on the physical reality of the terrain. He observed the way light interacts with different surfaces, from the jagged, exposed rocks within the burn to the soft, rolling grasses of the hill. The painting avoids excessive detail, opting instead for clear, graphic shapes that define the topography. By focusing on the aftermath of the burn, the artist draws attention to the cyclical nature of the environment. The work provides a clear view of the Maine woods, stripped of sentimentality and presented with a rigorous attention to colour and form.
