A large-scale Color Field abstraction by Friedel Dzubas, featuring layered bands of blue, green, and ochre.
Friedel Dzubas, a key figure in the development of Color Field painting, produced works that prioritise the physical presence of pigment on the canvas. Blue Tide demonstrates his approach to large-scale abstraction, where expansive areas of colour interact without the need for traditional representational forms. The composition is structured through horizontal bands of varying density and hue, suggesting a sense of movement across the surface. Dzubas utilised acrylic paint, which allowed him to manipulate the drying time and transparency of his colours. In this work, the deep blues at the top transition into darker, forest-like greens and blacks, creating a sense of atmospheric weight. A contrasting band of ochre sits at the base, anchored by a thin, sharp line of red. This specific arrangement of colour fields creates a tension between the flat surface of the canvas and the perceived depth of the layered paint. Unlike the gestural marks of earlier Abstract Expressionists, Dzubas favoured a more controlled application. He often used large brushes or squeegees to spread the paint, resulting in soft edges where colours bleed into one another. This technique removes the presence of the artist's hand, allowing the viewer to engage directly with the chromatic relationships. The work avoids narrative or symbolic meaning, focusing instead on the optical experience of the viewer. By balancing cool tones against the warm earth-toned foreground, Dzubas creates a stable yet dynamic visual field that occupies the viewer's peripheral vision.
