A delicate watercolour study by Theo Colenbrander, featuring fluid floral motifs and handwritten colour annotations on a soft yellow background.
This work by Theo Colenbrander, a Dutch architect and designer, represents his distinctive approach to decorative composition. Created around 1918, the piece functions as a preparatory study for a larger design, likely intended for ceramics or textile production. Colenbrander was known for his unconventional, highly stylised forms that often pushed the boundaries of traditional Dutch design during the early twentieth century.
The composition is defined by fluid, organic lines that delineate abstract floral shapes. Rather than aiming for botanical accuracy, the artist prioritises the rhythmic flow of the forms across the page. The yellow background provides a warm, luminous base, against which the muted tones of violet, soft green, and terracotta are applied. The presence of handwritten annotations on the paper, specifying colour choices such as 'geel' (yellow) and 'paars' (purple), confirms the functional nature of this drawing as a guide for execution in a different medium.
Colenbrander's work is characterised by a rejection of rigid symmetry. Here, the shapes overlap and interlock, creating a sense of movement that is typical of his later period. The lines are thin and deliberate, serving to contain the washes of colour while allowing the forms to bleed into one another. This piece offers a glimpse into the working process of a designer who prioritised imagination and decorative harmony over realism. It is a clear example of the transition from the structured aesthetics of the nineteenth century toward the more fluid, expressive designs that would define the early modern era in the Netherlands. The print captures the delicate texture of the original paper and the subtle variations in the watercolour application, preserving the authentic feel of the artist's hand.
