Nicolas Poussin painted Blind Orion Searching for the Rising Sun in 1658. The work depicts the Greek myth of the giant hunter Orion, who was blinded by King Oenopion. Guided by Cedalion, who sits upon his shoulders, Orion travels towards the east to have his sight restored by the rays of the rising sun. Poussin places the figures within a vast, atmospheric setting, where the scale of the giant is contrasted against the expansive, rolling terrain and distant mountains.
The composition is structured with a clear sense of order, typical of Poussin's mature style. The giant occupies the right side of the frame, his muscular form rendered with classical precision. Cedalion points the way, while the figure of Diana appears in the clouds above, observing the scene. The lighting is deliberate, with the sun beginning to break through the clouds, casting a soft glow across the valley.
