A detailed genre painting by Edwin Lord Weeks depicting a blacksmith shop in Tangiers, captured with precise light and ethnographic observation.

Edwin Lord Weeks was an American painter known for his extensive travels through North Africa, Persia, and India. This work, painted in 1876, captures a scene in Tangiers with the technical precision characteristic of his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The composition focuses on a blacksmith shop situated against the backdrop of a fortified wall. The thatched roof of the structure provides a contrast to the masonry, while the play of light across the dusty ground suggests the heat of the Moroccan sun. Weeks demonstrates a keen eye for ethnographic detail. Figures in traditional djellabas and turbans occupy the space, with a central focus on the farrier attending to a white horse. The inclusion of domestic animals, such as the dogs resting in the foreground, adds a sense of daily life to the scene. His palette relies on warm earth tones, ochres, and sandy yellows, which effectively convey the arid environment. The architectural elements, including the arched openings and the crenellated wall, provide structural order to the busy scene. Unlike some of his contemporaries who relied on studio imagination, Weeks often worked from sketches made on-site, which accounts for the specific observation of light and shadow found in this piece. The painting reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in the cultures of the Maghreb, documenting both the architecture and the social activities of the region during a period of significant colonial expansion.
