Description
Black Clough Beck runs through a rocky gorge beneath a high stone viaduct, where warm hillside colours and pale cloud give the narrow valley a quiet lift.
Three broad arches carry a straight parapet over the ravine, their shadows crossing the stream below. Squared masonry blocks are picked out in gold and umber, with a small cascade slipping between scattered boulders. Dense trees close in at either side, while purple wildflowers brighten the bank close to the water.
At Black Clough Beck, the meeting of moving water and railway-scale stonework makes the small valley feel intimate at ground level and open above. The eye can travel from the foreground cascade to the arches and higher fell slopes, echoing the changes in scale experienced on a walk through the beck's enclosed course.
