A striking 1910 oil painting by Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani, depicting a black bear with bold, simplified forms and a stark, minimalist composition.
Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, produced this work in 1910. He frequently utilised oilcloth as his primary surface, a material readily available in the taverns and shops of Tiflis where he lived and worked. This choice of medium contributes to the unique texture and sheen observed in his compositions.
The subject is a solitary black bear, rendered with a directness that characterises Pirosmani's approach to animal portraiture. The animal occupies the centre of the frame, set against a simplified horizon line that separates a dark, earthy ground from a lighter, atmospheric sky. The artist employs a limited palette, focusing on the contrast between the deep, opaque black of the bear's fur and the lighter tones of the background.
Pirosmani's technique involves broad, confident brushwork rather than fine detail. The bear's form is solid and monumental, possessing a weight that commands the space. Small details, such as the white claws and the hint of red within the mouth, provide necessary visual anchors. The inscription at the bottom, written in Russian, identifies the subject and provides the date, a common feature in his commissioned works for local establishments. This painting reflects the artist's ability to capture the essence of his subjects through a reduction of form and a focus on silhouette. His work remains distinct for its lack of academic artifice, favouring a raw, honest representation that aligns with the traditions of folk art.
