This Alphonse Mucha poster from 1897 advertises Biscuits Lefèvre-Utile (LU). The Art Nouveau design features a woman with flowing red hair, poppies, and a plate of biscuits.
Alphonse Mucha's 1897 advertisement for Biscuits Lefèvre-Utile (LU) is a classic example of Art Nouveau poster design. Mucha, a Czech artist working in Paris, became famous for his theatrical posters featuring Sarah Bernhardt. This poster shares many characteristics with his earlier work, including a decorative composition, muted colours, and an allegorical female figure. The poster was commissioned by the French biscuit company Lefèvre-Utile, now part of Mondelēz International. The company was known for using art in its advertising and packaging. The image depicts a woman with flowing red hair adorned with poppies and wheat. She wears a classical-style dress patterned with crescent moons and holds a plate of biscuits in one hand. The background is a swirling pattern of organic forms and muted colours, typical of Art Nouveau. The company name appears at the top in stylised lettering, and the year 1897 is displayed prominently at the bottom. Mucha's signature is visible near the bottom left. The design is both functional, advertising the product, and aesthetically pleasing, reflecting the artistic sensibilities of the period.
