Franz Marc, a leading figure in German Expressionism and a founder of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group, created 'Birds' in 1914. This painting exemplifies Marc's move towards abstraction and his interest in representing the inner essence of animals and nature. His work often explored themes of spirituality and the interconnectedness of all living things. He sought to convey these ideas through simplified forms and symbolic use of colour. Marc believed that certain colours evoked specific emotions or spiritual meanings. He was killed in action during World War I at the age of 36. His death marked a significant loss for the Expressionist movement. 'Birds' presents a dynamic composition of angular shapes and planes of colour. The birds themselves are not depicted realistically. Instead, they are suggested through abstracted forms that blend with the surrounding environment. The painting features a palette of blues, greens, reds, and yellows.
