A traditional Japanese screen painting by Kano Shōei, featuring birds and flora rendered in ink and colour on a gold-leaf ground.
This work by Kano Shōei represents the kacho-ga tradition, a genre focused on the depiction of birds and flowers. As a member of the Kano school, Shōei operated within a lineage that defined the aesthetic standards for the Japanese warrior class during the sixteenth century. The composition is spread across a multi-panel screen, a format designed to function within the architectural spaces of castles and temples. The gold-leaf background provides a reflective surface that illuminates the interior, while the ink-wash techniques define the forms of the pine trees, rocks, and avian subjects.
The imagery balances predatory action with serene observation. A hawk captures prey on the lower right, while other birds rest upon branches or take flight across the expanse. The inclusion of peonies and bamboo provides a seasonal context, suggesting the transition of time. Shōei employs a restrained palette, allowing the natural tones of the ink and mineral pigments to contrast against the metallic ground. The spatial arrangement relies on the Kano school preference for clear outlines and structured forms, which differ from the softer, more atmospheric styles of contemporary schools. This screen demonstrates the technical precision required for large-scale commissions of the era. The balance between the negative space of the gold ground and the density of the painted subjects creates a sense of order. The work remains a primary example of the decorative yet disciplined approach characteristic of the Kano family during the Momoyama period.
