A sparse, linear drawing by Dutch artist Rein Dool, depicting a clinical encounter between a dentist and a patient.
Rein Dool is a Dutch artist known for his precise, often unsettling approach to figurative subjects. In this work, titled Bij de tandarts, the artist employs a sparse, linear style to capture a clinical encounter. The composition relies on thin, deliberate strokes that define the contours of the two figures, leaving much of the surrounding space empty. This economy of line directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the dentist and the patient, where the focus is on the physical proximity and the specific gestures of the examination.
The drawing avoids unnecessary detail, opting instead for a schematic representation that borders on the grotesque. The dentist is rendered with a heavy, almost mask-like quality, while the patient is depicted in a state of vulnerability. The inclusion of a small cluster of flowers at the base of the frame introduces a curious, domestic element to the otherwise sterile environment of the dental surgery. Dool often explores the tension between the human form and the spaces it occupies, and here, the clinical setting serves to heighten the awkwardness of the scene.
Technically, the work demonstrates Dool's ability to convey character through minimal visual information. The lack of shading or tonal variation forces the viewer to engage with the structural integrity of the forms. By stripping away the background and focusing on the essential elements of the encounter, the artist creates a narrative that is both immediate and detached. This print offers a clear view into Dool's graphic practice, where the act of drawing is treated as a process of reduction rather than accumulation. It is a study in human interaction, captured with a sharp, observational eye that avoids sentimentality.
