A study of domestic intimacy, this work by Willem Bastiaan Tholen captures a figure bathed in the warm, concentrated light of a lamp.
Willem Bastiaan Tholen, a member of the Hague School and later associated with the Amsterdam Impressionists, frequently turned his attention to the quietude of domestic life. In 'Bij de lamp', the artist captures a solitary figure seated at a table, illuminated by the warm, concentrated glow of a lamp. The composition relies on the contrast between the deep, shadowy background and the bright, impasto-heavy application of paint on the lampshade and the papers spread across the table.
Tholen employs a rapid, gestural brushwork that prioritises the atmospheric quality of the scene over precise detail. The figure is rendered in dark, muted tones, allowing the light source to dictate the viewer's focus. This approach is characteristic of his later work, where he moved away from the more traditional tonalism of his earlier career toward a more personal, immediate style of observation. The painting functions as a study of artificial light within a private space, a subject that occupied many artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who were interested in the effects of modern lighting on interior environments.
By focusing on the mundane act of reading or working by lamplight, Tholen elevates a simple moment into a study of colour and shadow. The palette is restrained, dominated by earthy browns, deep reds, and the pale, creamy whites of the illuminated paper. The lack of clear facial features on the subject encourages the viewer to engage with the mood of the piece rather than the identity of the individual. This work demonstrates Tholen's ability to convey a sense of stillness and intimacy through economical means, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation in favour of direct, expressive paint application.
