A coastal scene by Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe, 'Bernaval' captures the beauty of the seaside with expressive brushstrokes and a light, airy palette.
Samuel Peploe (1871-1935) was a Scottish Post-Impressionist artist, known for his paintings of landscapes and still lifes. As a member of the group of artists known as the Scottish Colourists, Peploe's work is characterised by its bold use of colour and simplified forms. He travelled extensively in France, where he was influenced by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. His paintings often depict scenes from his travels, as well as still lifes of flowers and fruit. 'Bernaval' exemplifies Peploe's distinctive style. The painting captures a coastal scene with broad, expressive brushstrokes and a light, airy palette. The composition is divided into three horizontal sections: the sky, the sea, and the beach. The sky is rendered in shades of blue and white, with touches of green. The sea is a mix of blues and greys, with white highlights suggesting the movement of the waves. The beach is painted in a range of colours, from pale pink to deep blue, with small touches of red and green. The overall effect is one of spontaneity and immediacy, capturing the fleeting beauty of the natural world.
