Description
A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring a view of Mount Fuji framed by the arch of the Mannen Bridge in Fukagawa.
Katsushika Hokusai produced this woodblock print as part of his series, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The composition employs a geometric framing device, using the high arch of the Mannen Bridge to create a circular aperture. Through this opening, the viewer observes the distant peak of Mount Fuji, which appears small and precise against the horizon. The bridge itself dominates the foreground, with its wooden structure rendered in clear, linear detail.
Below the bridge, the scene captures daily life along the Fukagawa canal. A small boat drifts on the water, while a lone fisherman sits on the bank, his rod extending into the lower right corner. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment newly available in Japan during this period, provides the deep tones of the water and the sky. Hokusai balances the architectural rigidity of the bridge with the organic forms of the surrounding foliage and the calm surface of the canal.
This print demonstrates Hokusai's interest in perspective and the relationship between human-made structures and the natural world. The artist avoids excessive detail, opting instead for clean lines and flat areas of colour that define the spatial depth of the scene.
