A reproduction of Washington Allston's ambitious, unfinished history painting depicting the biblical scene of Belshazzar's Feast.
This work represents the final, unfinished magnum opus of Washington Allston, an American painter who spent significant time in Europe. The composition depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Daniel, where the prophet interprets the mysterious writing on the wall during the feast of King Belshazzar. Allston laboured over this massive canvas for over two decades, constantly revising the figures and the architectural setting. The scene is defined by a dramatic use of chiaroscuro, with light focused on the central figure of Daniel as he gestures towards the supernatural inscription. The surrounding figures, including the king and his court, are rendered in various states of agitation and awe.
Allston was heavily influenced by the Old Masters, particularly the Venetian school, which is evident in his treatment of fabric and the deep, atmospheric shadows that permeate the hall. The painting remains a subject of study for its complex history, as the artist struggled to resolve the perspective and the scale of the figures within the grand interior. Despite its unfinished state, the work captures the theatricality and emotional intensity characteristic of early nineteenth-century Romanticism. The print offered here provides a clear view of the composition as it existed in its later stages, allowing for an examination of Allston's ambitious approach to narrative art and his meticulous attention to the interplay between light and shadow. The architectural elements provide a sense of scale, while the grouping of the figures directs the viewer's eye toward the central confrontation between the prophet and the monarch.
