This ink wash study, attributed to the Hokusai School, demonstrates the economy of line and tonal control characteristic of the Edo period. The composition focuses on a small cluster of bellflowers and their broad, palmate leaves, positioned in the lower right quadrant of the frame. This asymmetric placement leaves a significant portion of the paper blank, a technique that directs the viewer's attention to the subtle variations in ink density.
The artist employs a wet-on-wet technique to render the leaves, allowing the ink to bleed and create soft, organic edges that suggest volume and texture without the need for rigid outlines. The flowers are depicted with lighter, more controlled strokes, providing a contrast to the darker, heavier foliage.
