A classical depiction of the Greek hero Bellerophon preparing for his legendary encounter with the Chimera, painted by Alexander Ivanov.
Alexander Ivanov, a Russian painter associated with the transition from Neoclassicism to Romanticism, produced this work during his formative years. The composition depicts the Greek hero Bellerophon receiving instructions before his mission to defeat the Chimera. The scene is structured around the interaction between the seated figure, likely King Iobates, and the hero, who stands ready with Pegasus.
Ivanov employs a controlled, academic approach to the human form. The musculature of Bellerophon is rendered with precision, reflecting the artist's rigorous training in the classical tradition. The presence of Pegasus, the winged horse, introduces a mythological element that balances the human drama. The horse is painted with a focus on its physical presence, its white coat providing a contrast to the darker, shadowed environment of the forest setting. In the background, the faint suggestion of classical architecture anchors the narrative in antiquity.
The colour palette remains grounded in earth tones, with the exception of the red drapery worn by the seated figure and the hero, which draws the eye across the canvas. The lighting is theatrical, casting deep shadows that define the figures and create a sense of volume. Ivanov avoids excessive ornamentation, preferring to focus on the psychological tension between the characters. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise narrative clarity with the formal requirements of historical painting. This piece offers a glimpse into the early development of an artist who would later dedicate much of his career to large-scale religious compositions. The print captures the textures of the original oil paint, from the soft rendering of the horse's mane to the firm lines of the figures.
