A detailed 1517 engraving by Domenico Campagnola depicting the martyrdom of Saint Catherine within a circular composition.
This circular engraving, dated 1517, depicts the martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Domenico Campagnola, a Venetian artist active during the sixteenth century, demonstrates his technical proficiency in this work through the use of varied line weights to define form and shadow. The composition is crowded with figures, typical of the period, arranged in a semi-circular fashion that draws the eye towards the kneeling saint at the centre.
Saint Catherine is shown in a posture of prayer, positioned before her executioner. The surrounding crowd consists of soldiers and onlookers, their expressions and gestures adding a sense of drama to the scene. To the right, a seated figure, likely representing the emperor, observes the proceedings. A dog rests in the foreground, a detail that provides a grounding element to the otherwise tense narrative. The architectural setting, suggested by columns and draped fabric, frames the figures and provides a sense of depth despite the circular format of the print.
Campagnola was heavily influenced by the Venetian school, particularly the work of Titian, which is evident in the muscularity of the figures and the dynamic poses. The engraving technique allows for a high degree of detail in the drapery and the armour of the soldiers. The artist has signed the work on a stone block in the upper left, ensuring his authorship is clear. This print is a representative example of the graphic arts produced in Italy during the High Renaissance, where religious subjects were frequently explored through the medium of printmaking to reach a wider audience. The work remains a study in the balance between narrative clarity and the constraints of a circular frame.
