A detailed 1737 etching by Jan Caspar Philips depicting a religious procession and pilgrims at prayer near Scherpenheuvel.
This detailed etching and engraving by Jan Caspar Philips, dated 1737, depicts a solemn religious procession moving towards the basilica of Scherpenheuvel. The composition captures the expansive rural environment of the Low Countries, with the distant town and church spires providing a clear destination for the pilgrims. In the foreground, the artist focuses on the devotional aspect of the journey: a group of figures kneels before a statue of the Virgin and Child, which is mounted upon a tree. The Latin inscription on the pedestal, 'Ego diligentes me diligo', reinforces the spiritual nature of the scene.
Philips employs precise line work to differentiate the textures of the foliage, the architectural forms of the distant town, and the varied garments of the procession participants. The use of cross-hatching creates depth in the sky and shadows, while the open space of the fields provides a sense of scale. The inclusion of a windmill on the left edge serves as a characteristic element of the Dutch and Flemish topographical tradition, grounding the religious subject in a recognisable regional setting. The work functions as both a historical record of local pilgrimage customs and an example of the technical skill associated with eighteenth-century printmaking. The balance between the small-scale human figures and the broader environment demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex narrative scenes within a single frame. This print offers a window into the religious life and visual culture of the period, documenting the intersection of faith and geography.
