This woodblock print by Kikukawa Eizan depicts a bijin, or beautiful woman, positioned amidst a cluster of morning glories. Eizan was a prominent figure in the Ukiyo-e tradition during the early nineteenth century, known for his focus on the female form and the fashion of the Edo period. The subject wears a kimono featuring a bold, chequered pattern, which contrasts with the dark, patterned obi tied at her waist. Her hair is styled in an elaborate coiffure, adorned with hairpins that indicate her status and refinement.
The composition balances the figure with the botanical elements. The morning glories, rendered with delicate lines, climb a trellis that frames the woman. The artist employs a restrained colour palette, allowing the blue of the flowers and the geometric pattern of the garment to provide visual interest.
