A refined Ukiyo-e ink painting on silk depicting three women from different social classes within a circular composition.
This work by Yanagi Buncho II presents a circular composition featuring three female figures, each representing a distinct social stratum within Edo-period Japan. The artist employs a delicate ink-wash technique on silk, characteristic of the period, to define the figures against a soft, atmospheric background. The circular frame, or roundel, creates a contained space that draws the viewer into the subtle interactions between the women.
The figure on the left, depicted with a head covering, suggests a woman of the working or merchant class, her posture relaxed and informal. In contrast, the central figure holds a folding fan, her attire and poise suggesting a higher social standing, perhaps a woman of the samurai class. The third figure, positioned to the right, displays the elaborate hairstyle and patterned kimono typical of a high-ranking courtesan or a woman of the pleasure quarters.
Buncho II uses fine, calligraphic lines to delineate the folds of the kimonos and the individual features of the faces. The contrast between the dark, solid areas of the hair and the lighter, more fluid treatment of the garments demonstrates a mastery of ink control. The composition avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the social distinctions conveyed through posture, dress, and accessories. This piece reflects the broader interest in the 'floating world' of the Edo period, where the lives and appearances of various social classes were subjects of fascination for artists and the public alike. The work is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it is preserved as a fine example of eighteenth-century Japanese figure painting.
