A striking Symbolist work by Franz von Stuck, depicting the biblical figure of Bathsheba against a dark, atmospheric pool.
Franz von Stuck, a founding member of the Munich Secession, frequently explored themes of mythology and the human form. In this depiction of Bathsheba, the artist employs a characteristic approach to composition, placing the figure against a dark, atmospheric backdrop. The contrast between the pale, luminous skin of the subject and the deep, shadowed water creates a sense of tension. The background features a fountain and a silhouette, suggesting a narrative space beyond the immediate foreground.
Stuck was known for his interest in the psychological weight of his subjects. Here, the figure stands in a pose that draws from classical traditions, yet the execution reflects the stylistic preferences of the early twentieth-century German Symbolist movement. The application of paint is controlled, with particular attention given to the play of light upon the water and the figure. The colour palette is restricted, relying on the interplay of warm, fiery tones in the distance and cool, dark blues in the pool to guide the viewer's eye.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance decorative elements with a clear, central narrative. The framing of the scene, with the figure positioned to one side and the water occupying the majority of the canvas, invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the subject and her environment. The presence of the silhouette in the background adds a layer of mystery, typical of Stuck's approach to biblical and mythological scenes. The print captures the texture of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal shifts and the specific quality of light that defines the composition. It is a representative example of the artist's later period, where his focus shifted towards more refined, atmospheric depictions of his chosen subjects.
