A lyrical oil painting by Maurice Denis, featuring a seated figure against a decorative blue background, characteristic of the Nabis movement.
Maurice Denis, a central figure in the Nabis group, often explored biblical themes through a lens of decorative synthesis. In this depiction of Bathsheba, the artist prioritises the flat, rhythmic arrangement of colour and form over traditional anatomical precision. The figure is rendered in soft, pale tones, contrasting with the surrounding blue field that suggests a garden or domestic interior. Denis was known for his assertion that a painting, before being a battle horse, a nude woman, or some anecdote, is essentially a flat surface covered with colours assembled in a certain order. This work reflects that philosophy. The background is not a realistic space but a decorative plane, populated by abstract floral motifs that echo the Nabis interest in textile design and Japanese woodblock prints. The brushwork is loose and expressive, allowing the texture of the canvas to remain visible in certain areas. By placing the subject against a dense, blue-toned backdrop, Denis creates a sense of quiet introspection. The figure is draped in white fabric, which provides a neutral anchor for the composition. The lack of deep perspective forces the viewer to engage with the surface of the painting as a unified whole. This approach to the biblical narrative moves away from the dramatic realism of earlier centuries, opting instead for a lyrical, dreamlike quality that characterises much of the artist's mature output. The work remains a clear example of the transition from late nineteenth-century symbolism toward the more abstract concerns of early twentieth-century modernism.
