Louise Moillon, a name perhaps less familiar than her male Baroque contemporaries, was nonetheless a pioneering force in 17th-century French still life painting. Born into an artistic family in Paris in 1610, her stepfather, François Garnier, was also a painter, exposing her to the world of art from a young age. Unlike many female artists of her time, Moillon achieved considerable recognition during her lifetime, celebrated for her exquisitely detailed and realistic depictions of fruit and vegetables. Moillon's paintings are characterised by their vibrant colours, meticulous attention to detail, and almost photographic realism. Her compositions often feature an abundance of seasonal produce, arranged in a way that is both visually appealing and scientifically accurate. Works such as "Still Life with Cherries, Strawberries, and Gooseberries" (1630) and "Basket of Peaches" (1646) showcase her skill in capturing the textures and colours of various fruits, making them appear almost tangible. Despite her success, Moillon's career was impacted by the religious and political turmoil of the time. A Protestant, she faced increasing challenges after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, which curtailed the rights of Protestants in France. Her output decreased in later years, but her legacy as one of the leading still life painters of the French Baroque endures, a testament to her talent and dedication to her craft.
