An 1820 etching by Johann Adam Klein depicting a traditional Roman carter with his oxen-drawn cart.
Johann Adam Klein, a German printmaker and painter, produced this etching during his residency in Rome in 1820. The work depicts a barozzaro, a traditional Roman carter, operating a heavy wooden cart pulled by a pair of oxen. The scene captures the daily life of the Roman Campagna, a subject that attracted many European artists visiting Italy during the early nineteenth century.
Klein demonstrates a precise approach to line work, using varied hatching to define the textures of the oxen's hides, the rough wood of the cart wheels, and the fabric of the driver's clothing. The composition is balanced, with the cart positioned in the foreground against a sparse, open horizon. The driver, seated atop the cart, holds a long goad, while a second figure is partially visible behind him. The inclusion of a cobblestone path and distant figures on horseback provides a sense of place and scale.
This etching reflects the interest in ethnographic and genre subjects common among artists of the Biedermeier period. Klein was known for his technical proficiency in printmaking, particularly in his ability to render animals and rural transport with anatomical accuracy. The work is signed and dated in the lower margin, confirming its origin during his formative Italian period. The print offers a glimpse into the transport methods of the time, documenting the utilitarian aspects of Roman life before the advent of modern infrastructure. The clarity of the lines and the focus on observational detail make this a characteristic example of Klein's graphic output.
