A tender portrait of Baroness Anna Sergeevna Stroganova and her son, painted by Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun during her time in Russia.
Painted in 1793, this portrait captures Baroness Anna Sergeevna Stroganova with her young son, Sergey. Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, a prominent French painter of the late eighteenth century, produced this work during her period of exile in Russia following the French Revolution. The composition reflects the artist's characteristic ability to convey maternal affection through naturalistic poses and soft, expressive features.
The Baroness is depicted in a striking orange-red gown, which provides a warm contrast to the deep green upholstery of the sofa and the cool blue tones of her headscarf. Her son, Sergey, is shown in a simple white garment, reaching towards his mother in an intimate gesture. Vigée Le Brun employs a refined technique, using smooth brushwork to render the textures of the fabric and the delicate skin of the subjects. The background is kept relatively simple, featuring architectural elements that suggest a formal interior setting without distracting from the figures.
This painting is representative of the artist's later career, where she continued to receive commissions from the European aristocracy. Her approach to portraiture often prioritised the emotional connection between sitters, moving away from the rigid formality seen in earlier court painting. The lighting is carefully managed to draw attention to the faces of the mother and child, creating a sense of warmth and domestic harmony. The work remains a clear example of the artist's technical skill and her capacity to adapt to the tastes of the Russian nobility during her stay in Saint Petersburg.
