Barnard Castle crowns a pale riverside cliff above the Tees, with the old stone bridge, clustered town houses and flowered bank giving this County Durham view a strong sense of scale.

Battlemented walls step across the rocky height to a square keep, their sunlit blocks broken by narrow openings and pockets of dark foliage. A broad arch of the bridge meets the river at left, while cream and ochre houses sit below the ruins. Pink wildflowers edge the foreground and long reflections carry the colour of the cliff across the water.

For a visitor, Barnard Castle can recall the point where a walk along the Tees turns towards the town and its rising ruins. Residents may recognise the familiar contrast between the river's low course and the fortified stone above, held together by the bridge.
