A detailed 1879 oil portrait of the artist's dog, Barbouyo, by the French realist painter Rosa Bonheur.
Rosa Bonheur, a French painter known for her precise observation of animals, produced this portrait of her dog, Barbouyo, in 1879. The work demonstrates her technical ability to capture the texture of animal fur and the specific character of her subject. Unlike many of her larger, more ambitious compositions depicting livestock or wild animals in motion, this piece is an intimate study. It focuses on the head and shoulders of the dog, set against a muted, neutral background that directs all attention to the animal.
Bonheur utilised a controlled palette of earth tones, browns, and ochres to render the dog's coat. The brushwork is soft, allowing for a realistic depiction of the shaggy, wire-haired texture of the breed. The dog's expression is calm, with a direct gaze that suggests a familiar relationship between the artist and her pet. The name 'Barbouyo' is inscribed at the top left, while the artist's signature and the date appear in the lower right corner. This painting provides a glimpse into the personal life of an artist who spent much of her career documenting the natural world. It avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a grounded, observational approach that was characteristic of her wider body of work. The lighting is soft and even, avoiding dramatic shadows to maintain a focus on the physical form of the dog. This portrait remains a clear example of Bonheur's skill in animal anatomy and her capacity for capturing individual personality within a realistic framework.
