This work belongs to a series of four panels depicting the life of Saint Zenobius, the patron saint of Florence. Sandro Botticelli produced these late in his career, moving away from the ethereal grace of his earlier mythological subjects toward a more austere, narrative style. The composition employs a continuous narrative technique, a common practice in Renaissance art, where multiple events from the saint's life occur within a single frame.

On the left, the viewer observes the baptism of Zenobius, while the right side of the panel shows his subsequent appointment as Bishop. The architectural setting provides a structured, rhythmic backdrop for the figures. Botticelli uses clear, linear perspectives to define the space, framed by classical columns that separate the distinct scenes. The figures are rendered with precise contours, and their garments display a range of muted tones, including ochre, soft blues, and deep reds.

Unlike his earlier, more decorative works, this panel prioritises clarity and storytelling. The expressions of the figures are restrained, focusing the viewer on the ecclesiastical events rather than individual emotion. The architectural details, such as the pediments and pilasters, reflect the influence of classical antiquity, which was a primary interest for artists in Florence during this period.
