A classic ink wash painting by the 17th-century master Shitao, featuring bamboo shoots and expressive calligraphy.
Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, remains a singular figure in the history of Chinese painting. As a member of the Ming dynasty imperial clan who became a Buddhist monk following the Manchu conquest, his work often reflects a spirit of independence and personal expression. This piece, depicting bamboo shoots, demonstrates his mastery of ink wash techniques and his rejection of rigid academic conventions.
The composition is balanced between the verticality of the bamboo and the calligraphic text that occupies the right side of the frame. Shitao employs varying ink tones to suggest depth and texture, moving from the dense, dark strokes of the shoots to the lighter, more diffused washes at the base. The bamboo, a traditional symbol of resilience and flexibility, is rendered with a spontaneity that characterises the Individualist style. The brushwork is fluid, showing the artist's confidence in capturing the essence of the subject rather than a literal representation.
The inclusion of calligraphy is integral to the work, as the text and image function as a unified whole. The characters are executed with a rhythmic energy that mirrors the organic forms of the bamboo. The presence of red seals provides a subtle contrast to the monochromatic palette, grounding the composition and indicating the work's history of ownership. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original ink, preserving the texture of the paper and the nuances of the brush strokes. It is an example of the literati tradition, where the artist's internal state and technical skill converge to create a work of quiet observation.
